Why I'm writing this

Like many people I loved my job and enjoyed work but I always felt that life was passing me by whilst I was getting up early, commuting, sitting inside an office, working late, commuting home and spending the weekends recharging my batteries. I was in the rat race and couldn't see a way to get off the wheel. I had so many dreams, so many things that I wanted to do in life, but I just couldn't find the time to make them happen.

With all the amazing technology we have I started to question the need to life in this way. Surely we could live and work in a manner that allowed us to earn a living from where we want to and when we want to. To be more free. To have a life not just a job.

After a grueling six months project working very long days and most weekends I decided it was time to treat myself and girlfriend to a well deserved holiday. A typical yearly antidote to a year of hard grind. On the way out I picked up an unassuming book that would change my life: "The 4-hour Work Week" by Tim Ferriss.

I consumed the whole book in the first couple of days. You simply must read this book if you want to change your life, but be careful as it really will change you. I came back and for the first time ever plucked up the courage to take real action by quitting my job and taking a (very considered and roughly planned) leap into the unknown.

One of the highlights of the trip was a very relaxed and enlightened gentleman named Thomas who led Yoga sessions. I love to do Yoga, especially when it's practiced out in nature, and Thomas will always stay in my mind with his rhythmic chanting of "Stretch to the maximum'. I named this blog in honour of Thomas and the amazing and life changing experiences of the holiday that made me realise there are ways you can live your life to the maximum.

I made a big decision, I've taken a risk, and now I'm out of the rat race. I quit my job and I'm in the 'real' world. I know it's not going to be easy, but it's giving me a chance to try out different ways of living and working. And really what's the worst that could happen?? I'm experimenting and exploring and in the process meeting a whole range of interesting and inspiring people who are on the same journey.

This blog doesn't hold all the answers, but it does contain a log of the life-changing journey that I'm on, my experiments, the results, the ups and downs. It's a honest account and you may not like it, but I'm not trying to please everyone. If you're on a similar journey or you just think that there must be better ways to live your life then hopefully you'll find it useful and I'd love to hear from you.
